FSP Film Club, April: Med Hondo’s West Indies: The Fugitive Slaves of Liberty
Streaming, but collectively. Watch a movie with your Freelance Solidarity Project comrades.
This month’s online screening will be West Indies: The Fugitive Slaves of Liberty, made by the Mauritanian director Med Hondo — at the time of its release in 1979, the most expensive African production ever. Hondo used that money to build a replica slave ship inside a derelict Citroen factory, staging the Middle Passage and French colonialism as song-and-dance agitprop. Jumping rapidly through time and place without switching locations, West Indies is militant cinema on a budget, “a musical comedy and a musical tragedy,” as Hondo himself described it.
